But if you’re looking for crystal-clear waters and soft white sand, you’ll need to venture a little further outside the city. Just about four hours by bus from Bangkok, Koh Samet is a hidden gem that offers the tropical island vibe many travelers dream of.

In this guide, I’ll share my firsthand experience visiting Koh Samet and explain the easiest ways to get there, along with tips on the best beaches and recommended places to stay.

Koh Samet: Thailand’s Hidden Island Escape

Not as widely known among foreign tourists, Koh Samet is a small island located just past Pattaya. Despite its size, it has earned a reputation as a weekend getaway for Bangkok locals, offering a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The island is long and narrow, stretching north to south, making it easy to explore by rental bicycles or motorbikes, which are the most popular ways for visitors to get around. Beaches are scattered across the island, so you can always find a quiet spot to relax, enjoy an ice-cold beer, or snack on Thai street food while watching the waves.

With its mix of local charm and tropical beauty, Koh Samet offers a more laid-back and authentic experience compared to busier destinations like Pattaya or Phuket.

How to Get to Koh Samet from Bangkok

Traveling from Bangkok to Koh Samet is straightforward and affordable. The journey usually involves two main steps:

Bus from Bangkok to Ban Phe Pier

Head to the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai Station) in Bangkok. From here, frequent buses depart for Ban Phe, the gateway to Koh Samet. A one-way ticket costs around 200 THB, and the ride takes about 4 hours. Tickets can be purchased directly at the counter, and it is often possible to buy a round-trip package that includes both your bus and ferry tickets, saving you time upon arrival.

Ferry to Koh Samet

Once you arrive at Ban Phe, transfer to a ferry bound for Koh Samet. The ride takes about 30 minutes. If you are unsure which pier to use, ask at a nearby convenience store or consult the staff at the bus station. Note that there is a 20 THB island entrance fee, and if you plan to visit protected areas within the island, you will also need to pay a 200 THB national park fee.

Traveling with friends can make the journey even smoother. When I went with a Dutch friend, purchasing a package ticket in advance simplified the entire process from Bangkok to the island.

Koh Samet’s Beaches You Shouldn’t Miss

Koh Samet is home to numerous beaches, each offering a unique atmosphere. Some are lively and filled with restaurants, while others provide a quieter, more secluded escape. During my visit, I explored two of the most popular and contrasting spots: Sai Kaew Beach and Ao Phrao.

Sai Kaew Beach

Sai Kaew, also known as “Diamond Beach,” is one of the island’s most famous and busiest stretches of sand. With its white powdery sand, crystal-clear waters, and lively beachfront cafés and restaurants, it is a hub for both locals and international travelers.

This beach also features playful additions like swings along the shore and even a large mermaid statue that has become a popular photo spot. The water here is shallow and calm, making it a great choice for swimming or simply relaxing on the sand.

Ao Phrao

For those who prefer peace and quiet, Ao Phrao offers a completely different vibe. Located on the western side of the island, it is about an hour’s walk from the main ferry pier, but can be reached in 20 minutes by motorbike taxi or rental scooter.

Ao Phrao feels like a private resort beach, with far fewer crowds and a tranquil atmosphere. The sea is shallow for a long distance, allowing you to wade comfortably without strong waves. It is the perfect spot if you want to enjoy Koh Samet’s natural beauty without the bustle of tourists.

Where to Stay on Koh Samet

Koh Samet has a wide range of accommodations, from budget hostels to upscale resorts. During my stay, I chose Luna Luna Hostel, which turned out to be an excellent option for both comfort and convenience.

The hostel offered fast Wi-Fi, air-conditioned rooms, and clean facilities, all at a reasonable price of around 450 THB per night. The staff were friendly and helpful, making the overall experience stress-free and enjoyable.

Its location was another highlight: just a short walk from the beach, close to the ferry pier, and surrounded by stylish cafés and local restaurants. For budget travelers who still want reliability and comfort, Luna Luna Hostel is a great choice.

If you prefer hotels or resorts, consider booking through Booking.com, which lists many of the island’s popular options. This allows you to secure accommodations in advance, especially during weekends and holidays when Koh Samet becomes a popular getaway for Bangkok locals.

If you are planning a trip to Thailand, experiencing the country’s natural beauty and tropical beaches is a must. Koh Samet offers the perfect balance: it is easily accessible from Bangkok, yet still feels like a hidden escape far from the city crowds.

Unlike Pattaya or Phuket, Koh Samet remains relatively unknown among international tourists, making it an ideal destination for travelers who want to enjoy clear waters, white sandy beaches, and a more relaxed island vibe.
