How to Get to Khao San Road

カオサン通りまでの行き方

Khao San Road is located in Bangkok, but unlike many popular spots in the city, it’s not directly connected to the BTS Skytrain or MRT subway lines. This makes it a little tricky for first-time visitors.

The easiest option is to take a taxi or tuk-tuk directly to Khao San Road. If you’re arriving by BTS, the closest station is Ratchathewi. From there, it’s about 3.9 km (roughly a 50-minute walk)—which is why most travelers still choose a taxi.

Taxi tip: Always ask the driver to use the meter, or negotiate the fare before you start.
Tuk-tuk warning: Tuk-tuks can be fun, but drivers often quote inflated tourist prices. Expect to negotiate and don’t be afraid to say no.

When you arrive, you’ll immediately notice the vibrant atmosphere—a mix of backpackers, street vendors, and neon lights. The road is always buzzing with energy, making it impossible to miss.

Nightlife on Khao San Road: Go-Go Bars

ゴーゴーバー

Go-go bars in Bangkok are lively social venues where you can enjoy drinks, music, and conversation. On Khao San Road, the atmosphere is at its best from evening until late at night, when most travelers head out to experience the city’s nightlife.

For first-timers, it’s worth knowing the three typical ways people enjoy go-go bars:

  1. Drinks only – Simply order a drink and watch the scene.
  2. Drinks with a hostess – Similar to a cabaret, you pay for company while you drink.
  3. Taking someone out of the bar – Costs vary depending on the venue and arrangement.

Prices differ slightly between bars, but in general the cost increases from option 1 to 3. If you’re just curious, starting with drinks only is an easy way to experience the atmosphere without spending much.

Khao San Road itself has a handful of spots, but the most famous go-go bar areas in Bangkok are actually located elsewhere in the city: Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, and Patpong. Each has its own style and reputation, which I’ll explain in the next section.

Recommended Go-Go Bar Area ①: Nana Plaza

Nana Plaza is one of the most famous and busiest go-go bar districts in Bangkok. Many travelers, including a large number of Japanese visitors, head straight here when exploring the city’s nightlife.

The plaza itself is a three-story complex packed with bars, each offering its own theme and style. The surrounding area is also filled with hotels, salons, and restaurants, making it a convenient hub for those who want everything within walking distance.

If you’re looking for the “classic” Bangkok go-go bar experience, Nana Plaza is often considered the first stop.

Recommended Go-Go Bar Area ②: Soi Cowboy

Soi Cowboy got its name from T.G. “Cowboy” Edwards, a former American pilot who helped establish the area. Today, it’s one of Bangkok’s most famous nightlife streets, known for its neon lights and easy access.

Located just a few minutes on foot from nearby BTS and MRT stations, Soi Cowboy is very convenient for visitors who want to explore without worrying about long taxi rides. The street is lined with a variety of go-go bars, each with its own unique theme and atmosphere.

Thanks to its central location and lively yet approachable vibe, Soi Cowboy is a popular choice for first-time visitors to Bangkok’s nightlife.

Recommended Go-Go Bar Area ③: Patpong

Patpong is another well-known nightlife district in Bangkok, located just a short walk from the Japanese quarter of Thaniya. You can easily reach it in about five minutes from BTS Sala Daeng Station or MRT Si Lom Station.

Compared with Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, Patpong tends to be a little less crowded and flashy. However, it’s popular among younger visitors, and the area is also famous for its night market, which runs alongside the go-go bars.

For travelers who want to combine nightlife with some shopping, Patpong offers a different experience from the other two major go-go bar districts.

Recommended Restaurant on Khao San Road: Buddy Beer Wine Bar & Seafood Restaurant

カオサン通り

Khao San Road is lined with countless bars and eateries, but one standout is the Buddy Beer Wine Bar & Seafood Restaurant. While it doesn’t focus on traditional Thai food, it offers a wide range of Western-style dishes—including French-inspired options—and an extensive selection of beers and wines from around the world.

When I visited, I ordered a salmon steak with potato salad alongside a cold beer, which was the perfect combination after a hot day in Bangkok. The flavors were excellent, and the restaurant’s relaxed, stylish atmosphere made it a great place to unwind.

Another plus is its location right in the middle of Khao San Road, so it’s easy to find. Prices are a bit higher compared to local street food stalls, but the quality and comfort make it well worth a visit.

Recommended Hotel on Khao San Road: Buddy Lodge Hotel

バンコクホテル

Right in the heart of Khao San Road, Buddy Lodge Hotel offers far more than a typical guesthouse. Run by a Western owner, the hotel has a distinctly international atmosphere, with many guests coming from Europe and North America.

  • Price: Around 3,000 THB per night (approximately ¥10,000 / about $85–90 USD)
  • Facilities: A rooftop pool perfect for cooling off, plus a small indoor gym for workouts
  • Rooms: Clean and comfortable, though during my stay the door lock required a little finesse to open—a reminder that you’re in Thailand
  • Atmosphere: Relaxed, with guests often sunbathing or reading by the pool

The location is extremely convenient. Since it’s right on Khao San Road, you can return to your room quickly after a night out. Nearby you’ll also find fast-food chains and cafés for easy meals.

Traveler’s tip: Don’t forget to bring the correct power adapter/voltage converter, as Thai outlets differ from Japanese ones.

If you want comfort and convenience while enjoying Khao San’s nightlife, Buddy Lodge Hotel is an excellent choice.

Conclusion: Enjoy Go-Go Bars in Moderation

Khao San Road is one of the liveliest and most colorful streets in Bangkok. Even in early March, with temperatures around 28°C, walking through the crowds and neon lights felt exciting and unforgettable. The friendly, upbeat atmosphere makes it a great place to meet people from all over the world.

That said, travelers should be cautious. As mentioned earlier, tuk-tuk drivers and some vendors may quote inflated “tourist prices.” For Japanese travelers especially, it’s easy to simply accept the first price given, but in Thailand bargaining is part of the culture. Don’t hesitate to negotiate politely—it’s expected and often leads to a fair deal.

Above all, enjoy Khao San’s nightlife responsibly. The go-go bars and busy streets can be lots of fun, but pacing yourself ensures a safer and more memorable trip.
