Hello, I’m Takuma, and I spent about four months exploring Hokkaido. During that time, I visited nearly every tourist spot in the region—except for northern Hokkaido. Out of all those places, the one I most want to recommend is Niseko Town.

Niseko has become famous as a truly global destination, with international schools, English signage throughout the town, and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors from around the world. The symbol of the area is Mt. Yotei, also known as “Ezo Fuji,” which gives the entire town an almost spiritual energy.

Of course, Niseko is also known for its food, hot springs, and especially winter sports, when countless snowboarders flock to the area. In this article, I’ll give you a quick overview of what makes Niseko so special and share a recommended model course to enjoy its summer charm.

The Charm of Niseko, Hokkaido

Many people might wonder, “Where exactly is Niseko?” Located on the western side of Hokkaido, Niseko is widely recognized as one of Japan’s premier resort areas. Throughout the year, visitors from both Japan and abroad come to enjoy its stunning natural scenery and unique atmosphere.

In spring and summer, the iconic Mt. Yotei—nicknamed “Ezo Fuji”—towers over the landscape, offering breathtaking views of Hokkaido’s vast wilderness. In autumn and winter, the mountain is blanketed in snow, creating a perfect setting for skiing and snowboarding.

One of Niseko’s most iconic symbols is Mt. Yotei, often referred to as “Ezo Fuji.” From nearly anywhere in town, you can enjoy spectacular views of this majestic peak.

Recognized as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, Mt. Yotei stands at 1,890 meters. While not extremely high, it’s a popular choice for hikers, especially from spring through summer, since it can often be climbed in a single day.

After a day of hiking, many visitors relax at the nearby hot springs, soaking away their fatigue while still enjoying the natural scenery. For those interested in climbing, there are several online resources and guides that provide detailed information about the routes.

In Winter, Niseko Becomes a Mecca for Pro Riders

During winter, Niseko attracts professional snowboarders and skiers from around the world, all in search of its legendary snow.

Niseko’s snow is renowned as some of the finest powder snow on the planet, often described as having the best quality anywhere. In recent years, many visitors from Australia and other countries have made Niseko feel almost like a town outside of Japan during the peak winter season.

The area offers a wide variety of ski courses, making it an ideal environment for riders of all levels. Niseko is also home to luxury resorts and restaurants, creating a vibrant international winter destination.

Niseko Is a Truly Global Town

Thanks to its world-class powder snow, Niseko has attracted a large community of foreign residents, and its international population has grown nearly tenfold over the past decade. This rapid growth is not limited to residents—tourism has also surged dramatically.

Recommended Sightseeing Spots & Sample Summer Itinerary in Niseko

Here are some of my top recommendations for places to visit in Niseko during the summer. If you have the chance to come to Hokkaido, be sure to add these spots to your travel plan!

Don’t Miss “Milk Kobo,” Niseko’s Famous Dairy & Food Complex

Located in Niseko, Milk Kobo is a must-visit spot filled with attractions for all ages. Inside the complex you’ll find cafés, gift shops, and restaurants that make full use of local ingredients.

One of the highlights is the fresh dairy products—ice cream, baumkuchen, and other sweets made with milk from nearby farms. The facility also offers plenty of photo-friendly spots that are perfect for Instagram.

Perhaps the biggest draw is Restaurant PRATIVO, where you can enjoy a buffet featuring mainly local vegetables. For just ¥1,550 (tax included), it’s all-you-can-eat, and you can also choose one main dish (meat, pasta, or seafood). From the restaurant’s windows, you’ll have a stunning view of Mt. Yotei while enjoying your meal.

Milk Kobo is a place you’ll definitely want to add to your itinerary when visiting Niseko.
